Health Food Store Dangers - October 29th, 2009

Are all of your health food store purchases healthy for you?

Buyer be smart.

Do you buy your dry cereal at the health food store thinking it’s healthy for you because it’s made with “organic sugar” or sweetened with fruit juice? Whoops, think again. Any sweets whether organic or concentrated fruit juice, affect your metabolism the same as plain old table sugar. They still spike your blood sugar, causing havoc in your glands that control blood sugar, the pancreas, adrenals and liver.

If you’re sensitized (allergic or addicted) to it you may tolerate concentrated fruit juice better than table sugar (sucrose).

But “organic sugar” is still sugar (maybe minus a few trace chemicals).

And sugar (concentrated sweets) cause a multitude of problems in your body. It ages you faster than you should, causing more wrinkles. It makes it harder for your immune system to fight off infections. It can interfere with digestion. Sugar cause degeneration in your body.

But they (sweets) sell products.

So food manufacturers entice you to think your doing something healthy for your body by using “organic sugar”. That’s because they sell more food products and justify significant price increases for their products simply by printing the word “organic” on the label. But as you can see “organic” is not always a synonym for “healthy.” It is the first problem and over-processing is the second problem. Over-processed flour or grain becomes dead food that stresses your body.

Corn certainly becomes dead food when it’s processed into cornflakes.

First it’s heated ( cooked) for almost 2 1/2 hours. Then it’s pressed by rollers to form the flakes, shaken and moved along on the conveyor belt. A syrup spray, heated to 425 degrees Fahrenheit, coats it. Lastly synthetic vitamins are sprayed on it and it moves into the package.

Yes, it’s dead food, thoroughly thrashed, bashed, overcooked, devoid of all enzymes and diminished in vitamin and other nutrient content. Synthetic vitamins aren’t so great either. So avoid all those highly processed, nutritionally deficient “organic” foods like organic potato chips, corn chips, donuts, waffles, sugar-added cereals, pizza, and frozen dinners.

Shop from the same aisles in the health food store as you would in the regular grocery store. Simply choose your food from the produce and meat section and carefully find the other whole food such as whole grain products and nuts. Choose health promoting whole food to nourish your precious body. After all, where will you live when your body wears out?

Skin Types, Sunscreen Products & SPF - October 29th, 2009

Whether you’re outdoors for recreational or work purposes, repeated exposure to the sun will have its natural consequences for your skin.

Regardless of color, skin that is repeatedly exposed to the sun tends to become tough and thick. Beyond the middle years of adulthood, the results can include wrinkly, leathery skin.

Irrespective of the circumstances for sun exposure, selecting a sunscreen product that offers some degree of protection from the sun’s UV rays can be one way to protect your skin from these ageing affects.

Due to the variety and range of sunscreen products available, here are some basic factors to consider in making an appropriate selection:

1. Ingredients:

Sunscreen products can be made with ingredients to protect against UVA rays, and / or other ingredients to protect against UVB rays (which are in fact more harmful for sun burning than UVA rays). The best products offer ingredients for protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Consider also the actual ingredient list. (I.e. Are they naturally derived / safe, or do they contain potentially harmful chemicals?).

2. SPF (Sun Protection Factor):

The SPF number on the product’s label refers to the strength of protection, and the length of time a sun-screening product will allow your skin to be in the sun without burning – relative to the length of time bare skin (or skin without the product applied) would burn or redden.

To sum that up, the SPF number tells people how much longer they can last out in the sun with protection for their skin, without being burned. The higher the SPF number, the longer the period of protection against the sun.

For example, let’s say ‘Joe’, a young student, would normally burn after 12 minutes of being out in the sun. He applies a sunscreen, also referred to as a sun block, with an SPF of 15. This means that he should be fine for 15 times his average amount of protection time. In other words, ‘Joe’ would be protected for up to 3 hours. Here’s the formula for calculating: 12 minutes x 15 SPF = 180 minutes (3 hours).

(Now if ‘Joe’ applied a sunscreen with an SPF of 30, he’d be protected for up to 6 hours. E.g. 12 minutes X 30 SPF = 360 minutes (6 hours)).

3. Skin Type:

When selecting a sunscreen, it’s important to consider the different skin types and how they react with exposure to the sun.

Young children: For ages 6 months+, consider a product with SPF of 15 or higher to protect against both sun tanning and burning. Also consider a product label that lists protection against both UVA and UVB rays (also known as the “broad-spectrum”).

Skin Type – Very Fair: This skin type generally burns quickly. Tanning is rare. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 20 to 30.

Skin Type – Fair: This skin type almost always burns easily. Some tanning can occur, although not much. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 12 to 20.

Skin Type – Light: This skin type burns in the moderate range. Tanning is normally gradual, yielding a light brown shade. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 8 to 12.

Skin Type – Medium: This skin type burns in the minimal range. Tanning happens much of the time, yielding a moderate brown shade. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 4 to 8.

Skin Type – Dark: This skin type rarely burns. Tanning occurs big time, yielding a dark brown shade. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 2 to 4.

Skin Type – Other: This skin type includes people with moles (or whose close blood-relatives have a history of moles), people with skin cancer in their family histories (including melanoma), and people with very fair skin and hair. As this is a high-risk category for health damage from too much UV exposure, consider using sunscreen products with the highest SPF available, combined with light to moderate sun exposure.

Once you’ve selected the most suitable sunscreen product, and regardless of your skin type, apply your sunscreen ‘before’ going out into the sun’s rays. To ensure the best possible UV protection, the sunscreen product should also be spread fairly thick, and in a uniform manner over all areas of the skin that will be exposed to the UV rays.

Whatever your current circumstances and choices are for going out in the sun, taking appropriate care of your skin ‘now’ will help determine a healthier and younger-looking skin in the future.

We Have a Right to Safe Cosmetics – But Our Cosmetics Aren’t Safe - October 29th, 2009

It would be reasonable to assume that we don’t need to ask the question, are our cosmetics safe? Safe cosmetics should be taken for granted shouldn’t they? After all, we have a government and corporations that look after our interests?

Sadly no. Neither the government or the major cosmetics companies take steps to ensure that our cosmetics are safe, and as a result there is a whole range of dangerous cosmetics and skin care products on the market which contain dangerous ingredients including lead, 1,4-dioxane and paraben.

Doesn’t the FDA do something about this? Sadly again, no. The FDA does not test or examine cosmetic products to establish that they are safe for human use and don’t contain harmful ingredients, and even admit to this on the FDA website. The government does not act in our best interests by ensuring that the cosmetics that millions of American women use every single day are safe to use, and as a result we have dangerous cosmetics on the shelves of our major department stores.

This situation has even spawned whole organizations committed to pressuring government and industry to use only proven safe ingredients in their products. The primary organization is called the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics.

Unfortunately neither the government or the cosmetics industry are listening to the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics, and nothing much is happening to improve the safety of those mascaras, blushes, eye shadows, face creams, lipsticks, bronzers and many more that most of us use, unaware that we may be damaging our health.

Here’s a couple of examples of unsafe cosmetics for you, though there are many.

The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics initiated laboratory testing of major brand name lipsticks in 2007. The report was astonishing. More than 50% of big brand name lipsticks, including some of the biggest names that you may well use now, contained lead. And you’re not even immune if you buy the most expensive brands, they were represented amongst the lipsticks that contained lead as well.

In 2002 laboratory testing found Phthalates, a family of industrial chemicals linked to birth defects and abnormalities in male genitals and feminization of males, in the majority of 72 common brand name personal care products, beauty products and cosmetics that we all use day to day. These included products by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Revlon, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein and Proctor and Gamble.

And included common household use products like shampoos and toothpastes as well as beauty and cosmetic products.

Of the 72 tested 52 contained Phthalates, and of course the labels didn’t disclose this.

Scary isn’t it?

Can you get safe cosmetics? Certainly you can, in fact the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics has a register of companies who sign it and commit themselves to producing cosmetics and skincare and beauty products using only safe ingredients. There are plenty of high quality safe cosmetics available, but they aren’t generally found on the shelves of your local department store.

And the companies that make them aren’t household names, in fact chances are that you’ve never heard of them. But their products, including their safe cosmetics, are first class.

Beauty Explored – What is Beauty? Why Do People Have Such Varying Views? - October 28th, 2009

There are many definitions of beauty for they mean different things to different people. If you have a leaning towards the visual arts, your view of ‘beauty’ might be a sunset, a mountain, a woman’s face, a vintage car, a sleek yacht or an old man’s face. Looking with different eyes, beauty might be found in the abstract equations of pure mathematics, the crystal structure of D.N.A. or the bizarre world of elementary particles.

The Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Fynman said many truths in his time on a variety of subjects, and not all to do with physics. Once in an in depth interview for the B.B.C. in 1965 he was asked about beauty. His answer was to recount the arguments he had with a close artist friend about the beauty of a flower. The artist would enter a discourse on the aesthetics of a flower, its texture, the composition the flower made with its surrounding etc.

Fynman retorted that this was really only a very superficial view of the flower and one that science could improve on. He maintained that there was a ‘hidden’ beauty born of knowledge present within the flower. Expounding this idea, he went on to describe how the cells the flower was made of had beauty in their different shapes and structures; and there was even beauty in the myriad chemical reactions going on that kept the flower functioning.

Feyman’s interview started people questioning their values on beauty, as well as fostering a deep interest in science in the young(myself included).

We now know that what may be termed ‘beautiful’ could be an object that is patterned or textured, an image of symmetry or asymmetry, or a celebration of perfection or imperfection. Beauty seems to be so wide in its definitions it cannot be pinned down. It is just so subjective ; and is, as they say, ‘in the mind of the beholder’.

One answer as to what beauty might be lies in the workings of the human mind itself. Our concept of beauty appears to be a construct of imagination. It seems evident that the mind invents, alters and contrasts what it perceives, to make sense of it. In other words, the mind attempts a construct of reality; and since we are all individuals, each produces a slightly different picture.

Skin Mole Removal with Natural Healing - October 28th, 2009

If you have a mole that bothers you it may seem that you are left with very few options as far as skin mole removal is concerned. Removing a mole from your body can not only be dangerous but it can leave you with a scar that actually looks worse than the mole that was there in the first place. Another thing that you should really be aware of is that not all moles are created equal. In fact, if you were to talk to any dermatologist they would tell you that sometimes moles are tell tale signs that something is wrong. If the mole is unusual in shape and size or if it changes quickly and bleeds it could be a sign of something that is wrong. But what are the options for skin mole removal?

Just a few years ago I thought that the only options for skin mole removal were to be found in the doctor’s office. I watched as my wife had some dangerous moles (as well as some that she just didn’t like) removed from her by means of freezing and surgery. The one mole that they removed left a permanent scar on her shoulder that still has some pain even a few years later. Fortunately there are some other ways of removing moles other than having your doctor cut them off or freeze them. There are natural methods that can be found online that will not only remove the mole from your body but will do it without any medicine or surgery and will leave no noticeable scar tissue.
