Not unrefined shea butter

Review Date: February 28, 2010
Reviewer: L. Nelson,
I've been using unrefined shea butter (mixed with aloe vera gel and some oils) on my hair and skin for a while now - this is not it.

People need to understand the industrial difference between organic and natural. Natural means that the product is processed, but nothing artificial is added to it. For all the ladies out there who are concerned about sodium laurel sulfate, a product can still be called natural even if it contains SLS! NOW Foods does specify that they do not use solvents (especially hexanes) in the extraction process and that nothing artificial has been added.

I figured by reading the reviews that this is refined, and not 100% pure as they advertise, by the description of it being a nice white color.

I bought this because it would have taken too long to get unrefined shea shipped in by the time I left for break. The organic store I went to charged $9.99 for it, which is part of the reason why I'm a bit peeved. But that is the price one pays for convenience.

As a skin moisturizer, this is great. If you warm your hands before application and rub really quickly, most of the grit can be melted. This shea glides onto the skin better than unrefined shea. It also sinks in and isn't as heavy. However, I really hate the grit!. And don't use this in your hair while it's damp. No matter how long you rub your hands together, there will still be white grit in your hair. My hair wasn't moisturized as well as had I used the unrefined shea.

I would buy this again simply because I wouldn't want to use up my hair shea on my skin. This melts faster, glides more easily and is basically perfect for skin application. As a moisture retainer for hair, it bombed.

UPDATE:

After a few more uses I will not buy this again. The grit makes the product not worth it for me.
Wonderful, natural moisturizer

I really like NOW products and the Shea Butter is particularly good. The product is generally solid, but just scoop a bit into your hands and warm it up by rubbing your hands together and it's ready to go. Although the Shea Butter is excellent for really dry skin I have also used it as a facial moisturizer with no breakouts (and my skin felt incredibly soft the next day). I like the NOW products (I also use the Almond Oil and Apricot Oil) because they're pure. No fillers, no fragrances -- just the product. And they're so affordable. NOW is a great find; glad to see them available on Amazon.
Excellent product!

I never used shea butter before. After using it I will never use those other hand lotions again. This shea butter is 100% natural. I sinks deep into your skin and gets rid of the dryness better than anything I have ever used. I highly recommend this product.
Natural Help for Eczema

My husband uses this everyday to help fight eczema. He had used a steroid cream for years, but it never really did much. After researching steroid creams he decided to switch to something natural. It hasn't gotten rid of the eczema, but it has done just as much or more for controlling it that the prescription creams did. It is such a powerful moisturizer that I've used it myself for dry feet.
Great product

I just received my "Now shea butter". I love that it has a very light, barely there scent to it (it's almost fragrance free). Usually, 100% shea butter tends to have a strong overpowering odor. I have bought raw shea butter before, and usually you have to rub it in your palms vigorously for it to melt before you can apply it to the skin or hair. This shea butter, is thick, has a very smooth feel to it and melts on your skin. Hours after I applied the butter to my feet and hands, my skin still felt very soft.I have also tried it on my hair and it seems to soften my kinky afro hair. Also when mixed with nutria coconut oil, you end up with a super mega moisturising hair treatment. "NOW SHEA BUTTER IS A KEEPER".
This is the real deal!

Reviewer: Anonymous,
I gave a jar of this Shea Butter to my wife, who is from Mali, West Africa and who grew up close to where Shea Butter is made. Her mother, who was a folk healer, used it both for the health of her skin and as a salve. My wife prefers this product to the Shea Butter sold by l'Occitane for many times the price L'Occitane Beurre de Karitè (Organic Shea Butter), 4.9-Ounce Tin. In particular, she finds the texture to be very authentic, and she also likes the lack of a strong scent.
Absolutely amazing

I swear you can use this stuff for ANYTHING. Dry hands? no problem put on a little shea butter. Want a better complexion? put it on your face before you go to bed. Ever get bad razor burn? shea butter to the rescue once again, make sure to apply it right after, and the following days. The best use I found for this product is as hair gel... YES as a hair product. Apply to damp hair and its amazing. Sometimes to the touch it can feel a bit greasy, but I have used this stuff as hair gel for the past 6+ months and it looks great. I have purchased this for all of my friends as well. Great price too!
It is 100% Puretastic

I like this shea butter a lot. I love that its 100% all natural. The consistency is very hard, so I softened it in the microwave, added a little olive oil and coconut oil to make my own body cream. My skin feels very soft love it!
